Andy currently serves on the Alameda County Planning Commission where he is a champion for affordable housing and community benefits. He is a past board member of our local Sierra Club and Vice Chair of the Alameda County Democratic Party. Andy also served as Co-chair of Berkeley’s Measure O & P campaign which raised $135 million for affordable housing and to expand homelessness prevention programs.
A graduate of the University of California Berkeley (Go Bears!) with a degree in Political Economics and Public Policy, Andy has been actively involved in the Berkeley Community for the past 15 years. As a student, Andy was actively involved in the Associated Students (ASUC) as the Campus Organizing Director in the Office of External Affairs. In that role, Kelley organized the Cal Votes Coalition which registered over 10,000 students to vote. He was one of the lead organizers for Cal Lobby Day, an annual event that brings students to Sacramento to meet with lawmakers face to face on issues facing students, to advocate for increase UC funding, housing options, and financial aide. As a board member of the University of California Students Association, Andy helped with a tuition freeze for students and organized the local Tuition Relief Now campaign.
In the wake of the passage of Prop 8, Andy joined the staff at the Courage Campaign to organize efforts to repeal the discriminatory proposition and win marriage equality. While at Courage Campaign Andy helped to organized Camp Courage activist trainings statewide, helped run Prop8TrialTracker, and organized advocacy campaigns. Andy also served as a leading organizer in the national campaign to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
A past Chair of the Berkeley Public Works Commission, Andy fought to secure funding to retrofit our senior and community centers for earthquake safety, to improve our city’s aging infrastructure, and supported efforts to reduce the dangers of wildfires. With the COVID emergency, record high unemployment, and a growing housing crisis we need an experienced advocate to be our voice on the Rent Board.
In addition to his volunteerism with the Sierra Club, Andy has dedicated his career to fighting climate change, advancing renewable energy, and fighting for environmental justice. As a member of the Executive Management Team at the California League of Conservation Voters, Andy was a leading advocate to pass SB 100, California’s 100 percent renewable energy standard, as well as legislation to create a Human Right to Water.
